New York City | More Celebrations, Brunch, Shopping & Burgers

After the most unforgettable New Year’s Eve, my new fiance and I headed to one of our favourite places in New York; Cafeteria. This restaurant is notorious for its brunch and 24 hour opening hours. We’d visited it last year with friends and decided it was one of our favourite spots.

We caught the Subway south towards Chelsea and were pleased to find there wasn’t that much of a queue for a table.

We were shown to our table and immediately ordered some fizz to toast our engagement.

New York - day 2.4

We took a quick look at the menu and were pleased to find that it hadn’t changed much since we were last there so we knew exactly what we were both going to order. For me it had to be the Mac Attack, complately calorific but so so so worth it! Mac Attack is a tasting of all three of their Mac and Cheese dishes; Chedder and Fontina, Smoked Gouda and Bacon and Truffle Oil. All three of them are delicious but the crispy bacon on top of the bacon on is divine and makes it my favourite out of the three. I enjoyed my Mac and Cheese with a side of sweet potato fries.

Matt chose the same dish he enjoyed last time he visited as he says it’s one of the best steaks he’s ever had. Plus who doesn’t want steak for breakfast! The Grilled Steak and Eggs comes however you like it, with chimichurri marinated steak, salsa verde and yuca fries.

After stuffing ourselves at brunch we jumped back on the subway and headed to the Rockefeller Centre so I could finally see the famous Christmas Tree all lit up! It was everything I thought it would be and I behaved much like an excitable child at the sight of it. While there we took a few photos to celebrate our engagement and even witnessed one on the ice skating rink below!

We then took a walk back down toward Macys so we could do a little sale shopping The sales weren’t as impressive as the Black Friday one we had witnessed the year before but I still treated myself to a number of MAC products.

In the evening, we had originally planned to head out for some cocktails at the Rainbow Room but found out it was actually closed for New Year Day, so feeling a little tired anyways we instead headed to a few local bars in Hell’s Kitchen and MidTown and ended up at Shake Shack for dinner.

I’d obviously seen and heard about Shake Shack from other on Instagram and on Food Blogs, and as big burger lovers we were happy to join the rather large queue. Thankfully the queue went down rather quickly and we were presented with our burgers, fries and shakes. I went for the Smoke Shack and Matt had the limited edition Roadhouse. Both we very cheesy and tasty. The fries were crisp and fluffy and the shake were thick and filling. Overall we were impressed. It’s not the most gourmet burger I’ve had but was fantastic comfort food – perfect for hangover I say!

  1. Loving these New York posts! Me and my hubby are going in May as part of our ‘proper’ honeymoon trip to the US. I’ve never been to America and neither of us have been to New York. We got married last August but only had a ‘minimoon’ in Ibiza so we’re really excited for our proper honeymoon. Enjoy your engagement!

    Love, Siobhan
