Lakeland Trails 15k Derwentwater Challenge

I am quickly becoming a professional bag holder it appears. Last weekend I headed back up to the Lake District to support my mum and brother in the Lakeland Trails 15k Derwentwater Challenge. My mum tried her best to persuade me to enter it with them, but not being the fastest runner I decided not to… and thankfully I’m glad! You can see from the photos just how high up the running route went – it was definitely a challenge!

The Lakeland Trails 15k Derwentwater Challenge took place in Keswick and started in Fitz Park. There was a number of different races throughout the day which created a great festival atmosphere as there was always someone to cheer, be it them starting or finishing  race. Batala Lancaster Drummers performed throughout the day and even lined up either side of the start line to drum the runners away at the beginning of the race.

My mum and brother warmed up and headed to the start line while I stood with all the bags and cheered my little heart out. Everyone did a lap of the park before heading up towards the fells, meaning I had the chance to take some photos of them both before they set off into the unknown!

It was a very hot day and apparently a very tough course; there was about 10k of inclines up the valley, bogs up to your knees and lots of rocks. However my brother who never fell runs came 14th out of 426 people with a time of 1 hour 16 minutes and my mum finished just short of her 2 hours target at 2 hours 7 minutes. They both did tremendously well and I’m very proud of them both; they almost inspire me to sign up to one… maybe next year!

I always enjoy being a spectator at event such as this, it’s amazing to see how supportive everyone is of each and every participant; whether it’s a sub 1 hour 10k or a 2 hour 10k everyone stands up and cheers them across the finish line. There was even a participant who just about collapse only 50 metres from the finish line, however another runner ran up to him and supported him across the finish line so he could finish. Which ever race I’ve been a spectator at there is always an amazing atmosphere.

Have you ever run the Lakeland Trails? Or an event similar to these? Have you any events lined up over the next year?
